What is it that makes an MCF Builders Home Green?

MCF is a green home construction company based in Chapel Hill, NC. We understand that not every home has room in the budget for the latest in solar or geothermal technology, but in every home there are choices we can make to be as green as practically possible. MCF is experienced in helping homeowners make smart choices regarding energy efficiency, responsible selection and use of materials, and integrating sustainable sources of power whenever possible. Below you will find a more detailed explanation of these principals, and an explanation of terms used throughout this site.

Energy Efficiency

Conservation first: Use your energy wisely!

It may not be as flashy as photovoltaic panels on the roof, but one of the most effective ways you can make your new home greener is to conserve the energy you already use. Whether you are using power to heat, cool, or run appliances, we recommend you choose systems that make the most of the power flowing into your home.

Heating and cooling are the major energy expenditures in every home.

MCF Builders uses only high-efficiency HVAC systems.  Current tax deductions make geothermal systems a great choice.  Every MCF home has a “tight envelope”–joints are tight, cracks are caulked, seams are sealed, etc. In addition, MCF “super insulates” each home, using spray foam insulation, and high-efficiency window and door units. A “cool roof” attic design and sealed crawl spaces are standard, and can save the homeowner up to 30 percent in energy costs compared to conventional attic and crawlspace systems. MCF guarantees that conditioned air stays where it needs to be with duct seal tests, blower door tests, and third party inspections.

Concerned about healthy air?

A greener home is a healthier home. Sealed spaces keep allergens like mold and dust out of your space, while fresh air intakes integrated into the HVAC system keeps the healthy air flowing. We encourage our clients to use natural hardwoods and stone whenever possible, and recommend the use of low-VOC paints and finishes to ensure the air quality in all our new homes from the moment you move in. Our custom cabinets use plywood with no formaldehyde and a water-based laquer.

Choosing Materials

Your choice of materials, finishes, and appliances can have a big impact on how green your home is. MCF encourages clients to choose materials that are earth-based, minimally processed, and of high quality/durability whenever possible. For example, finishes like sustainably harvested hardwood or stone meet all three criterion and add their natural beauty and warmth to your home. Whenever possible, choose Energy Star appliances and fixtures of high quality, and avoid disposable or short-life products.

Natural sources of power

MCF is experienced in designing homes with a variety of solar and geothermal power options ideal for our climate. All of our homes incorporate aspects of passive solar design, like solar orientation to maximize winter absorption of light and heat, coupled with wide overhangs to block the intense summer sun. Our gorgeous stone finishes double as thermal mass to hold and radiate seasonally appropriate warmer and cooler temperatures.

Active solar components use the power of the sun and special equipment to create a source of energy or electricity for your home. From solar hot water heaters to photovoltaic arrays that generate power for your own home and produce clean energy for the grid, we can make your vision of green living a reality. MCF uses only proven technology to reflect your vision and respect your budget.
